by posted 02/04/2019

A pair of local DC Girls Baseball players have been selected to participate in Major League Baseball’s inaugural High School Girls Baseball Invitational, a four-day camp that will host 64 amateur players from across the country. They were selected from over 180 applicants. Paloma Benach, 15, a freshman at Woodrow Wilson High School (Washington DC), and Joanie O’Connell,15, a freshman at St. Stephens and St. Agnes School (Alexandria, Va.), will travel to Arlington, Texas, from March 7-10 for training, games and individualized instruction from former MLB players and current and former USA Baseball Women’s National Team players. The camp and games will take place at the Texas Rangers’ Youth Academy and Globe Life Park, the Rangers’ home stadium. Benach and O’Connell were members of the DC Girls Baseball squad that in August claimed the 14-and-under championship at Baseball For All nationals, the premier youth girls baseball tournament in the country. Benach was also a member of DCGB’s 13U 2017 nationals-winning team. Benach is an alum of Capital City Little League and trains locally with the Moose Baseball. O’Connell is a product of Arlington Little League.
